Hi, happy to have you here

Hi! I'm Sunriser, the maintainer of this wiki and wildly unprepared project lead for this here Ego Breakers.

I wanted to create this section as an introduction to the project as a whole, so that people interested in playing it (or, egads, contributing to it???) could have at least a chance of understanding some of my bullcrap; this page in particular is supposed a sort of identity card for it.

So, let's get to it!

Ego Breakers

Ego Breakers is a 2D action-oriented Metroidvania platformer, with mechanics primarily inspired by the Megaman Zero/ZX games and 2D fighting games and with an expansive and branching(?) story.

Player agency is at the forefront, both in the story (featuring wildly different endings and NPC interactions depending on the player's actions) and in the moment to moment gameplay, thanks to the I.N.K.S. system, which allows the player to customize their moveset as they see fit, and the titular Ego Break mechanic, a stance break that allows for freeform combos that both the player and enemies have access to.

The tech stack

The game is being developed in the Godot Game Engine; for music and sound effects I use REAPER.

The game's Discord server

For now, the game's server is collaborator-only, but if the project grows any legs we'll make it public (somehow)! If you're a collaborator and I managed to not invite you please write me a strongly worded DM reminding me to.

The game's world

The game takes place in Naluund, an extremely fractured peninsula where wildly different cultures and kingdoms seem to somehow coexist: from feudal kingdoms to highly advanced technocracies to nomadic tribes, widly different lives interact and mingle, despite apparently coming from different times.

The player will experience these differences firsthand, fighting through a variety of locales ranging from classical high fantasy to dystopic cyberpunk settings.

The main power system of the world is Oniria, a form of evocation magic born of the nature of the Oniric Plane: those who are skilled in the Oniric craft may rewrite small portions of reality at will, usually conjuring weapons or producing physical effects such as heat or light.

The game's story

The Protagonist regains consciousness in a dark void, known only as the Sea of Ink, with not even a body to call her own; once given a body by a mysterious entity and guided through the depths by an ethereal woman who calls herself Ara, she manages to reach the Material Plane.

Shortly after being helped to a nearby town she witnesses, alongside many others like her, the speech of a god; calling himself Ego, he declares war on those he calls Awoken, and beckons them to face him at Obsidya's Last, the greatest fortress of the Obsidian Kingdom at the opposite end of the peninsula. If any were to slay him, they could claim his place as the new God of this world.

Depending on the player's deeds in the Awakening Wars different story events will come to pass, in a way similar to SMT's Law/Chaos system.

At this stage in development, 4 endings are planned:

  • Somnia, or the Lawful route
  • Incubia, or the Chaos route
  • Vera Oniria, or the Neutral/Balanced route
  • Bloodbath, only available on NG+ (genocide route)
