Maya
Overview
A mysterious androgynous youth with white hair and a scar running across their temple that conveniently appears when their intervention is needed, such as allowing the player to proceed in the Cemetery Woods.
They symbolize the feeling of grief and loss that is inherent in succession, and wield the Ego of Roxenal, the Mad God.
(Sidenote for languages with no agender pronouns: if no other option is presented she/her pronouns are “correct” for them, but other characters in the game never quite figure out if they’re a boy or a girl).
While nobody in the game really figures this out until way later they’re not from any Naluund in particular, being a sort of reincarnation/spawn of Roxenal himself, a sort of glitch of creation that was then taken care of by kind strangers along the way.
Maya's role in the story changes depending on the player's actions in the following way:
- Somnia Route: They are freed from Roxenal, and remain a non-combatant until the end of the game.
- Incubia Route: Roxenal takes over them due to the mounting chaos within Naluund, and they have to be killed to stop his rampage.
- Vera Oniria Route: With the Protagonist’s help Roxenal is brought back to his senses and reveals his true nature as the God of Dreams and Maya as his successor, turning them both into the key to reach Truth.
- Bloodbath Route: Through immense pain and hatred towards the Player they overcome Roxenal's shattered psyche and assimilate him: the knowledge of Truth allows them to easily perform Hubris, facing you as the Frenzied One.
Character
Maya is an extremely unpredictable character, true to their nature as a literal lost child. While never actively hostile against the Protagonist (who they seem to have a soft spot for in all routes but Bloodbath)
